In Luxembourg, ACL Sport is the only organisation authorised to issue driving licences to people who want to compete in karting races. ACL Sport offers two national karting championships, which are briefly described below:
The first championship offered by the ACL is part of the ‘Ligue Karting Grand-Est’, an association of the former regional karting committees of the Alsace-Lorraine and Champagne-Ardenne regions. In its 2025 edition (which is still ongoing), this championship consisted of six races, each comprising the following:
– Qualifying races
– Qualifying rounds
– A super race
– A final
In the qualifying races, all categories race for 6 minutes.
In the qualifying rounds, the Mini 60 category (Vortex mini 60 FR engine, designed for minis) races for 8 minutes + 1 lap, while the other categories race for 10 minutes + 1 lap.
In the super race, the Mini 60 category races for 10 minutes + 1 lap, while the other categories race for 12 minutes + 1 lap.
Finally, in the final, the Mini 60 category races for 12 minutes + 1 lap, while the other categories race for 15 minutes + 1 lap.
Depending on their position after each race, each rider receives a certain number of points: 50, 40 or 32 points for the first three places, 26 to 16 points for places 4 to 10 and 13 to 1 point for places 11 to 24. In addition to these points, 2 extra points are awarded for pole position in qualifying and 2 more points if the driver sets the fastest lap time in the final.
A second, more demanding competition
The second competition offered by the ACL is linked to the IAME Benelux Series and also comprises six rounds. More than two hundred drivers line up at the start line on these race weekends. Although the structure of the races is similar to that of the LKGE championship, the IAME Benelux Series is significantly more prestigious. The races consist of an 8-minute non-qualifying race in a single group if fewer than 36 drivers are at the start. This is followed by 5-minute qualifying races for each category. The times of these heats determine the starting grid for the qualifying heats, which precede the final. After the qualifying heats, a ranking list is drawn up for the final. For example, the points for the first places are distributed as follows:
Position | Points |
1 | 80 |
2 | 76 |
3 | 73 |
4 | 71 |
5 | 70 |
The ‘A Final’ comprises the riders who finished in positions 1 to 36 after the qualifying heats. The ‘B’ final comprises the drivers ranked 37th to 72nd. For the ‘Mini Rookie’ (7–10 years) and ‘Mini’ (10–13 years) categories, this consists of a race over 11 minutes + 1 lap. For all other categories, it is 14 minutes + 1 lap.
Double scoring
These two championships are run by ACL Sport under the name Group 1 for the Ligue Grand Est championship and Group 2 for the IAME Benelux championship. Eight drivers with a Luxembourg licence issued by ACL Sport take part in the latter, and eleven drivers in the IAME championship. Although these championships have their own classifications, drivers can also score points for a Luxembourg national classification in the races
