The Mercedes G-Class 580 EQ embodies both the heritage and innovation of the German brand.
Since its premiere in 1979, the G-Class has stood for robustness and off-road capability. With the introduction of the 580 EQ version, Mercedes-Benz is combining this tradition with the latest in electric mobility.
It is difficult to distinguish the model from a G-Class with a combustion engine at a glance. The angular lines and silhouette, characteristic of the model built in Austria, have been retained but further developed with subtle touches that emphasise the electric character. The high-performance LED headlights, the specific EQ radiator grille and the 20-inch light-alloy wheels add a touch of sophistication. The car is available in a range of colours. In matt blue in particular, it will not go unnoticed on the road.
The interior of the G-Class 580 EQ exudes luxury and impresses with technological features. Mercedes uses high-quality materials with seats made of nappa leather, real wood inserts and brushed aluminium trims. The heated and ventilated front seats with massage function offer exceptional comfort even on long journeys. The space in the rear is generously dimensioned so that even tall passengers can travel comfortably. The boot offers 620 litres of space, enough for a family’s luggage. The dimensions are still impressive, with a length of 4.62 metres, a width of 1.98 metres and a height of 1.99 metres. The wheelbase of 2.89 metres ensures good stability on and off-road.
Under the bonnet, there is no roaring V8, but four electric motors – one for each wheel. These provide unrivalled traction and a combined power output of 587 hp and an impressive 1,164 Nm of torque. With this drive, the vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds. It offers a range of 400 kilometres in the combined cycle and just over 600 kilometres in the city. Despite its weight of 3,085 kilograms (including 727 kilograms of battery), the Mercedes retains its qualities as an adventurer. According to the manufacturer, the 116 kWh battery can go from 10 to 80 per cent in 32 minutes. The maximum charging power is 200 kW. With a weight like that, the consumption is understandably high, between 27 and 38 kWh.
The car handles well when driving – just like sitting in an SUV. Given its size, the lateral inclination is not surprising, but the steering is precise. It is easy to manoeuvre, even when parking. The high seating position is a positive feature that enhances the sense of security.
The G-Class 580 EQ is equipped with the latest technologies. The MBUX infotainment system with 12.3-inch touchscreen, which is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, offers an intuitive and responsive user interface. The Burmester 15-speaker audio system transforms the interior into a concert hall. Other features include level 2 autonomous driving and a 360° reversing camera.
In terms of safety, the G-Class 580 EQ is equipped with all the latest driver assistance systems. Collision Warning with Emergency Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition ensure the protection of all occupants. The robust structure of the G-Class and its purposefully designed crumple zones ensure a high level of passive safety in the event of a collision.
Mercedes has managed the feat of electrifying its iconic G-Class without distorting it. The charisma of the model will live on, but without noise and exhaust fumes. However, the icon comes at a price. It costs from €143,559 and a good €175,000 in the Edition One version.
