Audi presents the third generation of the Q5 SUV. We are once again treated to a premium SUV with new features in terms of design, performance and technology. With its diesel engine, quattro all-wheel drive and optimised chassis, this Q5 TDI is designed to appeal to motorway driving enthusiasts.

Exterior: A more dynamic design

The design of this new generation of the Q5 embodies a subtle but significant evolution. More sporty and assertive, it appeals with its balanced proportions. The Singleframe grille, enlarged and enhanced by functional air intakes, asserts a more imposing visual presence. The LED headlights, with their refined and expressive light signature, reinforce the SUV’s dynamic character while incorporating advanced technologies such as Matrix LED options. The bonnet, now straighter and longer, accentuates the vehicle’s robust and imposing appearance.

The sides are marked by clean, dynamic lines that emphasise the Q5’s assertive personality. The alloy wheels, available up to 21 inches, add a touch of power and elegance, reinforcing its athletic style.

At the rear, customisable OLED lights add an innovative aesthetic dimension while offering advanced safety features. A light strip now connects the two lights, creating a sophisticated visual signature. The entire rear end is elegantly understated, with a diffuser integrated into the bumper that enhances the square exhaust pipes of the diesel engines, giving the SUV a modern and refined finish. The new Q5 is 5 cm longer than the previous generation, now measuring 4.72 m in length, 2.15 m in width and 1.65 m in height. These imposing dimensions emphasise the robust character of this SUV.

Interior: Luxury and simplicity

The interior of the Q5 embodies Audi’s signature luxury and simplicity, where every detail has been carefully designed to combine comfort and functionality. As soon as you step inside the vehicle, you immediately notice a radical change from previous generations.

The SUV is equipped with an innovative system consisting of two main screens: the Curved Audi MMI Experience Pro. The 14.5-inch central touchscreen allows you to manage vehicle settings and multimedia, while the 11.9-inch Virtual Cockpit Plus offers a fully customisable interface for the driver. In addition, a 10.9-inch MMI screen for the front passenger makes it easy to navigate or control the radio without distracting the driver. The latter also has internet access for watching videos on YouTube, reinforcing the technological and connected feel of the interior.

The S Line option enhances this interior with premium materials such as heated leather seats, a flat-bottomed 3-spoke steering wheel and brushed aluminium inserts. The sophisticated, customisable multi-coloured ambient lighting creates a warm and refined atmosphere. The illuminated contours of the dashboard and doors accentuate the feeling of space, highlighting an interior design focused on well-being and elegance.

In the rear, passengers enjoy generous and comfortable space, complete with heated seats and USB ports for charging mobile devices. However, the centre passenger is slightly disadvantaged due to the presence of the imposing tunnel that houses the Quattro system’s transmission shaft and exhaust.

The boot, although 35 litres smaller than the previous generation, remains generous with a capacity of 515 litres. This volume makes it easy to transport all the luggage needed for a family holiday, while maintaining passenger comfort.

Driving: Dynamism and Versatility

The chassis of the 2025 Q5 SUV has been optimised to offer the perfect balance between comfort and dynamism. The adaptive air suspension (available as an option) automatically adjusts the damping according to the driving conditions and the mode selected via Audi Drive Select. This system offers several modes, ranging from comfort to a sporty configuration and even an off-road mode. Thanks to this technology, the Q5 can lower or raise its body as needed: a low suspension, ideal for motorways to reduce aerodynamic drag, or a high suspension, suitable for rough roads.

With a weight exceeding 2 tonnes, the TDI engine’s acceleration is slightly sluggish, despite the 48V mild hybrid system. In dynamic driving, the 7-speed DSG7 automatic transmission can lack responsiveness and is a little hesitant when changing gears, making the engine more audible when revving up. To overtake quickly, you need to press the accelerator firmly and push the engine into the revs.

On the other hand, the Q5 TDI excels on the motorway. Once underway, it stands out for its smooth and quiet ride. The double glazing eliminates wind noise, while the active suspension effectively absorbs road irregularities, offering optimal comfort on long journeys.

The Audi Q5 features a host of driver assistance systems, such as a high-quality 360-degree camera ideal for manoeuvring, cruise control and lane departure warning, all of which come as standard. Advanced assistance packages are available as options, including features such as Adaptive Cruise Control Plus, which uses map and real-time data to optimise safety and navigation, and Active Front Assist, which combines emergency braking and other advanced aids.

Engine: Loyalty to TDI

The new Audi Q5 is based on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) designed for longitudinal combustion engines and incorporates ‘MHEV plus’ mild hybrid technology with a 48V electrical system. This solution combines a 1.7 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery with an 18 kW electric motor. This system reduces emissions, improves performance and enhances driving comfort. In particular, it enables limited electric manoeuvring, energy recovery during deceleration and ensures that the air conditioning system continues to operate even when the combustion engine is switched off.

The test model was equipped with the 2.0L TDI EA288 evo diesel engine, a 4-cylinder engine developing 204 hp and 400 Nm of torque from 1,750 rpm, offering smooth and progressive acceleration. Coupled with the 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox, it enables the Q5 to go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.2 seconds, a remarkable performance for an SUV in this category.

In terms of efficiency, Audi announces average fuel consumption of between 5.9 L and 8.8 L/100 km, with CO₂ emissions ranging from 146 to 200 g/km, depending on the configuration. These figures, although high for a diesel engine, can be explained by the weight of the vehicle. However, thanks to its 65-litre fuel tank, the Q5 can travel over 500 km without refuelling, a significant advantage for long journeys.

Conclusion

The new 2025 Audi Q5 Diesel is positioned as a sophisticated premium SUV, combining sophisticated design and cutting-edge technology. With its optimised chassis and micro-hybrid technology, it perfectly meets the expectations of frequent drivers looking for a vehicle that is enjoyable to drive, versatile for everyday use and ideal for clocking up the miles on the motorway with ease.
