With 4,277 new passenger cars registered in Luxembourg in July 2026, the market posted a 3.1% year-on-year decline, according to open data published by the SNCA on data.public.lu. Behind this modest drop in volume, the market’s structure is shifting sharply: electric vehicles now account for close to a third of sales, while Chinese brands have almost doubled their market share in a year.

According to open vehicle fleet data published by the Société nationale de circulation automobile (SNCA) on the data.public.lu portal, 4,277 new passenger cars were registered in Luxembourg in July 2026, compared with 4,412 a year earlier. The market therefore contracted by 3.1% year-on-year, a moderate decline that falls within a traditionally quiet month, as customers head off on holiday and dealerships slow down.

Electric cars edge close to a third of the market

On the powertrain side, hybrids (petrol or diesel, plug-in or not) remain in the lead with 36.9% of July’s registrations, down from 41.0% in July 2025. Electric vehicles made strong gains, rising from 19.5% to 33.0% over the year, a jump of 13.5 percentage points, driven notably by the Kia EV3 and the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric, both among the month’s ten best-selling models. Petrol fell to 22.2% (from 28.6%), while diesel continued its decline to 7.6% (from 10.8%) a year earlier. Altogether, electrified powertrains (electric and hybrid combined) accounted for 69.9% of new cars in July, up from 60.5% a year earlier.

BMW tops the brand rankings, Mercedes CLA remains best-selling model

In the brand rankings, BMW takes the lead with 12.1% of registrations (516 units), a position it already held in June (15.8%). Volkswagen (10.2%), Mercedes (9.8%), Audi (7.7%) and Škoda (7.2%) follow. Renault (6.6%), Peugeot (5.7%), Kia (4.4%), Volvo (3.0%) and Ford (2.9%) round out a top 10 that accounts for 69.6% of the market.

Among models, the Mercedes CLA confirms its leading position with 95 units (2.2% of the market), ahead of the BMW iX3 (80), the Škoda Kodiaq (77), the Volkswagen Golf (75) and the Kia EV3 (73). The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric (71), the Opel Corsa and Audi A3 Sportback (59 each), the Ford Puma (57) and the Škoda Kamiq (55) follow.

The model rankings look markedly different from July 2025. The Nissan Juke, Volkswagen Polo, Dacia Bigster and Duster, as well as the Volvo XC60 and XC40, have dropped out of the top 10. They have been replaced by the Mercedes CLA, BMW iX3, Kia EV3 and Renault 5 E-Tech Electric, four newcomers that illustrate the growing weight of electric vehicles among the month’s best sellers.

Chinese brands double their market share

Chinese manufacturers continued to gain ground in the Grand Duchy. Combined, Jaecoo, BYD, MG, Omoda, Leapmotor, BAIC, Forthing, Xpeng, Geely, BAW, Zeekr and Livan totalled 189 registrations in July 2026, or 4.4% of the market, up from 2.45% a year earlier, meaning their market share has nearly doubled in twelve months. The number of active Chinese brands in Luxembourg also rose from nine to twelve over the period, with Geely, BAW and Zeekr joining the market.

Jaecoo now leads the Chinese brands with 49 units, ahead of BYD (44) and MG (27), which held the top spot a year earlier. Omoda (19) and Leapmotor (12) complete the podium, followed by BAIC and Forthing (11 units each) and Xpeng (8).

July confirms a trend that has been building since the start of the year: a market broadly stable in volume, but whose composition is changing fast, driven by the rise of electric vehicles and the growing presence of Chinese manufacturers.

Methodology: these figures are based on the monthly vehicle fleet extracts published as open data by the SNCA on data.public.lu. New registrations for July are identified by first registration date, among vehicles in the national “car” category still present in the August extract. Vehicles registered and then taken off the road within the same month are not counted.
