Hybrid, 100% electric or combustion engine, we looked at the most affordable models among the fifteen best-selling brands in Luxembourg. While petrol remains the most affordable engine type, electric is slowly gaining ground. An analysis.

With the Autofestival just a few days away, we reviewed* the cheapest models sold by the fifteen most popular brands in Luxembourg. We looked at five different engine types: 100% electric, full hybrid, plug-in hybrid, petrol and diesel.

All brands offer electric vehicles

It is worth noting that each of the top fifteen brands offers a 100% electric entry-level model. The cheapest is the Dacia Spring (€12,494) and the most expensive is the Porsche Macan (€80,067). Due to the disparity between brands and their positioning, we have chosen to analyse the median price. This means that you need to budget between €14,494 and €36,040 to buy an electric model from half of the brands studied.

In terms of range, the best-performing model is the Porsche Macan with 644 km, while the Dacia Spring only manages 225 km. On average, entry-level 100% electric models offer a range of 408 km and a price/range ratio of €91 per kilometre of range.

The editorial team’s choice** : Renault 5

Car of the Year 2025, this small city car has a bold look. But beyond its retro-futuristic design, Renault is offering a starting price of €24,077. Please note: at this price, the car does not come with many features. You will therefore need to upgrade to benefit from a higher level of equipment. It is worth noting that it is eligible for a €6,000 subsidy, which brings the price down to below €20,000. In terms of range, with 312 km WLTP, it has a good price/range ratio of €77/km.

Volkswagen ID3 35 670,00 € 388

HEV hybrids: cheaper but less choice

For those who want to switch to electric while retaining some combustion power, non-rechargeable hybrids (HEVs) have a median price of €23,807.51 at the entry level. The most affordable model is the Toyota Aygo X HEV (€19,960), while the most expensive is the Kia Niro (€29,999). However, be aware of the maintenance costs for non-rechargeable hybrid engines, which can be more expensive than electric and petrol engines. It should be noted that this type of technology is only offered by six brands.

The editorial team’s choice** : Aygo X HEV

While some claim that hybridisation is the best of both worlds, we don’t entirely agree. Two technologies coexisting means the advantages of both… but also their disadvantages. That’s why we chose Toyota’s Aygo X HEV, a safe bet from the Japanese manufacturer at a reasonable price.

Car Brand Model Price
Renault Clio HEV 22 046,00 €
Peugeot 208 22 291,02 €
Kia Niro 33 833,00 €
Hyundai Kona Hybrid 31 570,00 €
Toyota Aygo X HEV 21 960,00 €
Dacia Duster hybrid 155 25 324,00 €

Plug-in Hybrid, spoiled for choice

Plug-in hybrids are offered by all the manufacturers on our list except Tesla and Dacia. The cheapest model is the Peugeot 308 PHEV (€36,040), while the most expensive is the Cayenne e-Hybrid at €112,966. The median price is €48,435, which is significantly higher than models with non-rechargeable engines.

The editorial team’s choice** : Peugeot 308 PHEV

With a starting price of €36,040, the 308 caught our attention. It stands out for its good price/technology ratio, attractive design and suitability for both young professionals and young families.

Petrol: unbeatable prices

With a median price of €19,790, petrol cars are significantly cheaper than entry-level electric models. The difference is €10,000, which is not insignificant. The cheapest model is the Dacia Sandero (€13,431), while the most expensive is once again Porsche with the Cayenne, priced from €99,811. It should be noted that two brands, Tesla and Volvo, do not offer petrol engines.

At the entry level, small petrol city cars are attractive because of their affordable price, low fuel consumption, manoeuvrability in town and low maintenance costs, making them an economical and practical choice for everyday driving.

The editorial team’s choice** : Skoda Fabia

This city car is affordable (€19,730) and practical. It offers more interior space than some of its competitors, which are cheaper but smaller. It has an attractive design and its dimensions make it versatile, both in the city and on the motorway. Well-equipped even in the lower trim levels, the Fabia appeals for its value for money and fuel efficiency. A smart choice for motorists looking for a compact, functional and affordable vehicle.

Diesel: seven brands are holding out!

Only seven brands are holding out by offering diesel engines. With a median price of €36,840, this type of engine is not only rare but also much more expensive than petrol. The median price difference between entry-level petrol and diesel models is €17,000. This represents a significant additional cost, as well as a limited choice. Specifically, the cheapest model is the Renault Kangoo (€26,736), and the most expensive is the Toyota Hilux (€51,417). But whatever people say, diesel remains an alternative due to its robustness, high range and efficiency on long journeys.

The editorial team’s choice** : Audi A3 Sportback

Starting at €31,350, Audi offers an elegant and reliable model with comfort, precision handling and chassis. And above all, it is cheaper than most of its competitors in our comparison. Driving a diesel car does not have to mean sacrificing style.

BMW Serie 1 36 840,49 €
Mercedes Classe A Berline compacte 38 844,00 €

*Methodology:

Our comparison focused on the fifteen brands that sold the most new cars between 1 January 2024 and 31 December 2024 (according to the SNCA) in Luxembourg. Between November and December 2025, we consulted the prices displayed on their Luxembourg websites.
