With the ES90, Volvo aims to redefine the premium saloon by combining Scandinavian elegance, cutting-edge technology and SUV-inspired versatility.
Volvo is continuing its electric transformation with the ES90, a large, 100% electric saloon that follows in the footsteps of the EX90 while asserting its own personality. Designed for the Chinese market, this new model, built in China, aims to appeal to a demanding clientele seeking comfort, range and functional design.
A silhouette between a saloon and an SUV
At 5 metres long with a generous wheelbase of 3.10 metres, the ES90 has an elegant fastback silhouette that is taller than a conventional saloon (1.55 metres) but lower than an SUV. It has a ground clearance of 18 cm and a raised seating position without sacrificing aerodynamics (Cx of 0.25). The 20- to 22-inch wheels reinforce this assertive stance. This positioning, a compromise between a saloon, fastback and SUV, gives the ES90 an original stance on the market.
The ‘Thor’s hammer’ light signature at the front, the smooth glass surfaces and the flush door handles contribute to a sleek and functional aesthetic. Inside, the panoramic roof reinforces the business class feel: wraparound headrests, a 9-inch driver’s display and a 14-inch central display make up a cockpit that is both understated and high-tech. The materials used are both durable and refined: real wood with a visible grain, high-quality recycled textiles, brushed aluminium inserts and soft-touch surfaces. For music lovers, Volvo offers a premium Bowers & Wilkins audio system with 25 Hi-Fi speakers throughout the cabin.
300 km in 10 minutes
Based on the same platform as the EX90, the ES90 offers several powertrains ranging from 333 to 680 hp, with batteries from 92 to 106 kWh. The range is up to 700 km in the WLTP cycle for Twin Motor versions. In terms of charging, Volvo claims that 300 km can be recovered in 10 minutes, and 10 to 80% in just 20 minutes thanks to an 800 V architecture.
An impressive LiDAR
Volvo remains true to its reputation for safety. The ES90 features LiDAR capable of detecting its surroundings up to 250 metres away, day or night, regardless of weather conditions. This device creates a real ‘safety bubble’ around the vehicle, enhancing the driver assistance systems. On the downside, drivers will have to get used to its imposing presence on the roof.
A wide tailgate and spacious boot
The boot, accessible via a tailgate, offers a volume ranging from 446 litres to 733 litres with the three rear seats folded down individually. At the front, a 22-litre frunk provides storage space for cables or small items.
Unlike many traditional sedans, the ES90 features a large, motorised tailgate (rather than a conventional boot), which makes it much easier to access the cargo space.
While we wait to get behind the wheel, the Volvo ES90 looks like a solid contender in the electric saloon market. Prices start at £67,837 for the Core trim and £71,506 for the Ultra trim.
