The Hyundai IONIQ 9 is making a splash on European roads. Winner of the ‘Premium Car of the Year’ title in Germany, it is establishing itself as the new flagship of the IONIQ range. This large, 100% electric three-row SUV is aimed at high-end family customers looking for comfort, technology and range. Positioned at the top of the range, it complements the IONIQ 5 and 6.
The IONIQ 9 is much more than just a new model: it embodies Hyundai’s electrification strategy. Built on the E-GMP modular platform, it benefits from the experience gained with the IONIQ 5 and 6. This model marks a decisive step in the Korean manufacturer’s ambition to become a world leader in electric mobility by 2030.
Inspired by the Korean hanbok, the IONIQ 9’s silhouette combines fluid lines with robustness. The ‘aerostatic’ design optimises aerodynamics while asserting a strong visual identity. Inside, the atmosphere is that of a mobile lounge: flat floor, relaxing seats with leg rests, sliding centre console (Universal Island 2.0), and high-end sustainable materials. The space is generous, even in the third row, with six or seven-seat configurations.
Under the bonnet: technology and performance
The Hyundai IONIQ 9 is based on an 800V architecture, guaranteeing performance and fast charging. It is available in two configurations: rear-wheel drive with a 160 kW motor, and all-wheel drive with two motors delivering up to 317 kW. The latter can go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds, a remarkable performance for a vehicle of this size.
The 110.3 kWh battery offers a range of up to 620 km according to the WLTP cycle, particularly on the rear-wheel drive version equipped with 19-inch wheels. When it comes to charging, the SUV is impressive: it can go from 10% to 80% in just 24 minutes on a 350 kW ultra-fast charging station. This means you can tackle long journeys with peace of mind.
Its dimensions match its ambitions: 5.06 metres long, nearly 2 metres wide, and a 3.13-metre wheelbase that guarantees exceptional interior space. It comes with a plethora of features: intelligent voice assistant, CCNC interface, heat pump, swivel seats, panoramic roof, and a full range of latest-generation advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
On the road: comfort and control
The IONIQ 9 impresses with its quiet operation, enhanced by the ANC-R system and acoustic windows. Handling is reassuring, suspension comfort is remarkable, and acceleration is brisk (0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds for the Performance AWD version). Braking is progressive and well calibrated, even during dynamic driving. The SUV is equally at home on the motorway and on winding roads.
Ultra-fast charging thanks to the 800V architecture means shorter stops. Optimised thermal management via a heat pump preserves range in winter. The V2L system transforms the vehicle into a mobile power source, useful for camping or remote working. Driver assistance and electric navigation aids make long-distance journeys easier.
The Hyundai IONIQ 9 successfully combines space, innovation and efficiency. Compared to competitors such as the BMW iX and Mercedes EQS SUV, it offers a credible and competitive alternative. Its value for money, comfort and technology make it a relevant choice for modern families and enthusiasts of high-end electric mobility.
In terms of price, the 7-seater version starts at €68,651 in Luxembourg, while the 6-seater version starts at €87,023. In its highest trim level, Calligraphy, it is priced at €84,123.
