Founded in 2006 in Santa Cruz, California, Zero Motorcycles has spent its 20-year history specialising in fully electric motorcycles across the naked, sport-tourer and supermoto segments. Adventure bikes remain a rarity even among electric two-wheelers, largely because of the range expectations the segment demands — a critical consideration where battery-powered machines have so far shown their limits. The American brand nevertheless takes on that challenge with the Zero DSR/X 2026.

Several riding modes are available via the intuitive, easy-to-read display, configurable from Rain to Sport. The bike comes standard with ABS, traction control and cruise control, managed by Bosch’s Motorcycle Stability Control (MSC) system. A reverse gear can be engaged through the display menu when manoeuvring. The ergonomics are accessible and comparable to other adventure-tourers, with a seat height of 828 mm. The upright riding position proves comfortable, with a natural knee angle; the wide handlebar makes it easy to tip the bike into corners. The windshield height is adjustable via a rotary knob. A slight air turbulence is noticeable at the top of the helmet, while the shoulders remain well shielded from the wind. The traction battery, with a capacity of 17.3 kWh, sits in the lower section of the steel trellis frame to keep the centre of gravity as low as possible. The Zero DSR/X 2026 weighs 247 kg with a payload of 252 kg, bringing the maximum permissible total weight to 499 kg — a noteworthy figure in the adventure segment. Charging is handled via a Type 2 connector; a charging station can bring the battery to 100% in roughly one hour.

How does the motorcycle perform in the real world? The electric motor’s power delivery immediately stands out for its smoothness and precise throttle calibration. This tuning allows the rider to keep the unit’s hefty 225 Nm of torque fully in check at all times. Power is transmitted directly to the rear wheel via a toothed belt, which eliminates any driveline snatch during the transition from braking to acceleration.

Cornering feel is precise, though the rider will need to put some effort into the handlebar to lean the Zero into a bend. Road imperfections are dispatched without fuss by the 46 mm upside-down fork and the rear Showa shock absorber. The 190 mm of suspension travel strikes a good balance between comfort and sportiness, suited to the vast majority of riders.

On the subject of range: Zero claims 288 km in urban conditions and 172 km under normal circumstances. During our test at a relaxed pace combining country roads and motorway riding capped at 100 km/h, we covered 180 km. At 130 km/h on the motorway, however, range drops sharply — under those conditions, around 130 km is the realistic ceiling.

All things considered, the Zero DSR/X is a highly versatile electric adventure bike that makes a compelling case for everyday use, and is perfectly capable of longer rides at a measured pace. A Power Tank Upgrade option is available for those needing extra range, boosting battery capacity to nearly 21 kWh. Build quality is generally high, though the €23,340 base price is hard to call a bargain. Zero counters this with a promise of very low running costs.
