Our 2026 summer tire test in size 225/50 R17 reveals that a good tire isn’t one that excels in a single area, but one that strikes a balance between safety, longevity, and efficiency.
As part of a 2026 summer tire test, European automobile clubs, including the ACL, put 16 models in size 225/50 R17 through their paces — a popular size suited to mid-segment vehicles such as the Audi A4 Avant, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class, and Skoda Octavia. The tests were carried out on an Audi A4 Avant, using the manufacturer’s recommended inflation pressure.
Each tire was evaluated based on two main pillars: driving safety (70% of the overall score), which covers dry road performance (40%) and wet road performance (60%); and the environmental assessment (30%), which includes projected mileage, wear, energy efficiency, noise, sustainability, and environmental responsibility. Wet road tests include ABS braking from 80 km/h, longitudinal aquaplaning (8 mm of water) and lateral aquaplaning (5 mm of water), as well as handling sessions on a soaked circuit.
