Electric cars registered in Luxembourg since January offer an average WLTP range of 536 km, 40 km more than a year earlier. The increase is driven by a handful of models with very large batteries, notably the Mercedes CLA.

In August 2026, the average range of new electric cars registered in the Grand Duchy stood at 542 km under the WLTP standard. In November 2024, it reached no more than 503 km. Over the first eight months of the year, the average was 536 km, compared with 495 km over the same period in 2025. That is a gain of more than 40 km, or 8% in a year.

A jump in January

Throughout 2025, the average range hovered around 500 km, with a low of 489 km in February. In January 2026, it jumped by almost 25 km in a single month, from 505 to 529 km. It has not fallen below 525 km since, and reached a record 547 km in June. That same month, the market also posted its highest volume, with 1,574 electric registrations. This progress has gone hand in hand with market growth. Between January and August, 10,232 electric cars were registered, up from 7,975 a year earlier (+28%).

The CLA and iX3 pull the average up

The January jump coincides with the arrival of two new models with very long range. With 734 units registered between January and August, the Mercedes CLA 250+ is the country’s most registered electric car this year. Across all powertrains, only the Volkswagen Golf (753) has done better. The CLA is homologated at between 694 and 792 km. The BMW iX3 50 xDrive, the first model of the ‘Neue Klasse’, has notched up 436 registrations, with a WLTP range of between 678 and 805 km.

Together, these two models account for around 11% of new electric cars this year, enough to explain much of the increase. Behind them, the Kia EV3 (504 units, up to 605 km), the Tesla Model Y (410 units) and Model 3 (301 units), and the Skoda Elroq 85 (238 units) also exceed 500 km WLTP in their large-battery versions.

Superminis hold the trend back

At the other end of the scale, the Renault 5 E-Tech electric, the second most registered EV with 611 units, makes do with 312 to 410 km depending on the battery. The BMW iX1 eDrive20 (432 units) also stays below the 500 km mark. With lower volumes, the Renault 4 E-Tech (151 units), the BYD Dolphin Surf (88 units), the Hyundai Inster (74 units) and the Dacia Spring (53 units) offer roughly 220 to 410 km.

These models are designed for urban and suburban use, where a large battery is not essential. Their presence is a reminder that the average does not reflect a uniform need among motorists. Rather, it reflects the structure of a Luxembourg market in which premium models carry considerable weight.

A theoretical figure

WLTP range is a homologation figure, measured under standardised conditions. In cold weather or on the motorway, real-world range is generally 20 to 30% lower. An electric car rated at 540 km will therefore cover something closer to 380 to 430 km on major roads in winter. That is still more than enough for everyday journeys in Luxembourg, including round trips to neighbouring countries.
