Mountain passes, winding roads, open horizons: the fine season was made for riding. But before you twist the throttle, a few checks are in order. A thorough inspection of your motorcycle is the best insurance for enjoying every kilometre without any nasty surprises.
For many riders, holiday preparation doesn’t only happen on a map or a screen — it also happens in the garage. A motorcycle in good condition, securely fastened luggage and an attentive rider: that’s the winning trio for tackling long distances with peace of mind. Here’s a rundown of the checks not to overlook before setting off.
- Check the essentials
Start by checking the condition and pressure of your tyres. A loaded motorcycle often requires an adjusted pressure, as indicated in the manufacturer’s handbook. Check tyre wear and look for any bulges or cracks, and inspect the brakes: pads and discs. Don’t forget to check your battery and the motorcycle’s full lighting system. A faulty light can quickly become a problem on a night ride or in poor weather conditions.
- Check the fluid levels
Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid: all levels must be checked before departure. If a service is coming up, it may be worth bringing it forward to avoid any unpleasant surprises during the holidays.
- Check the drivetrain
For chain-driven motorcycles, cleaning, lubricating and checking chain tension are essential. A well-maintained drivetrain not only improves safety and riding comfort, but also extends the life of the motorcycle.
- Distribute your luggage properly
Panniers, top boxes or saddlebags must be properly secured. Distribute the load evenly and avoid overloading the rear of the motorcycle. An overloaded bike alters its handling, particularly when braking and cornering.
- Plan for the unexpected
Bring a tyre repair kit, a few basic tools, road maps or a GPS, a high-visibility vest and your vehicle documents. Also think about packing a rain suit and a microfibre cloth to clean your helmet visor. In the event of a breakdown or an unforeseen situation, ACL roadside assistance can save you a great deal of trouble. Before a long journey, you can also have your motorcycle inspected at our Diagnostic Center so you can set off with complete peace of mind.
- Don’t forget the rider
Finally, prepare yourself too! Check the condition of your gear, stay well hydrated and plan frequent breaks on long rides. A rested rider is a more alert rider. If you are travelling abroad, make sure to check the rules in force in the countries you will be passing through: in France, for example, wearing reflective strips on your helmet is compulsory.
A few minutes of preparation before departure can make all the difference. All that’s left to do is twist the throttle and savour the finest roads of the summer. Safe travels and happy holidays to all!
