Over the first five months of 2026, 21,416 new passenger cars were registered in Luxembourg, a slight increase. Behind the market’s stability, electrification is gathering pace, as six of the ten most registered models are electric cars.
The Luxembourg car market remains on a stable trajectory. Between January and May 2026, the country registered 21,416 new passenger cars, an increase of 1.5% on the same period in 2025. The start of the year was mixed: a January in sharp decline (3,339 registrations, against 3,720 a year earlier), followed by a particularly buoyant April (4,924 units, up 12.9%), before a slightly weaker May.

More than one car in two is an SUV
The underlying shift is confirmed on the powertrain side. Non-plug-in hybrids cross the one-third mark, at 33.2% of new cars, against 28.8% a year earlier. Electric also gains ground, at 28.8% (+2.1 points). Conversely, petrol falls back to 23.2%, diesel drops below 9% and plug-in hybrids decline sharply, to 5.7%.
In all, electrified powertrains, which together cover electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid, now represent 67.6% of new cars, against 63.9% over the first five months of 2025. The combustion engine alone continues its decline.

Volkswagen keeps the lead with 13.1% of registrations. Behind it, Mercedes (10.9%) takes second place from BMW (10.1%), followed by Audi (7.7%) and Škoda (6.0%). The top four brands remain German, and the top ten account for 67.5% of sales.
On the model side, the Volkswagen Golf remains in front, but this year’s hallmark is the surge of electric: the electric Mercedes CLA climbs to second place, and six of the ten most registered models are electric cars, among them the Renault 5, the Kia EV3, the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, and the BMW iX1.
The dominance of the SUV shows no sign of fading: this format accounts for 51.6% of new cars over the period. It is followed by compacts (16.3%), city cars (10.6%), saloons and estates (8.3%) and people carriers (6.2%). Coupés, convertibles and sports cars now make up just 2.3% of the market.
