With the M 1000 R, BMW is pushing the boundaries of the hyper roadster concept and presenting the ultimate version of the S 1000 R. This extraordinary motorcycle was developed under the ‘M’ label, which stands for performance at BMW.

Sculptural and aggressive design

The BMW M 1000 R impresses with its striking appearance, which combines bold aesthetics with carefully optimised functionality. The test model with M Competition Package features numerous carbon parts and an M exhaust system made of titanium by Akrapovič. A complete package that definitely turns heads.

The compact, symmetrical LED headlights replace the monoblock lighting of previous generations and ensure a uniform, futuristic appearance. The genuine carbon wings, which are positioned at the front on the left and right and are referred to as ‘winglets’, are not just a visual detail, but also ensure greater driving stability.

The M package with parts made of milled, double-anodised aluminium includes levers, shift paddles, footrests and footrest brackets. They add extra sophistication to the already immaculately crafted machine. With its sharp lines and sculpted surfaces, the M 1000 R presents itself aggressively and confidently.

The tank and side air intakes reinforce its imposing character, while the single seat and minimalist rear emphasise its image as a performance machine. The M Motorsport colour palette, which stands for BMW’s sporting heritage, further accentuates the bodywork.

The rims and carbon details, including the front and rear mudguards, tank cover and chain guard, give the machine a touch of exclusivity. Precisely crafted details such as the milled M parts round off the image of a luxurious and powerful motorcycle.

An engine from the world of racing

Hidden beneath the fairing is an engine that is sure to turn heads. The M 1000 R features a version of the S 1000 RR’s four-cylinder in-line engine that has been optimised for roadster use.

With 210 hp at 13,750 rpm and maximum torque of 113 Nm at 11,100 rpm, this roadster is one of the most powerful in its class. The engine features variable valve control, also known as BMW ShiftCam, which combines power and smooth running. On the open road, it is almost impossible to exploit the entire rev range of the engine, as the motorcycle already reaches very high speeds at 8,000 rpm. To fully enjoy the engine’s exceptional pulling power, a ride on the race track is a must. The lightweight and powerful titanium exhaust system ensures a captivating sound. Depending on the speed, this changes from a deep rumble to a piercing howl. In Race mode, pop & bang noises can also be heard. Acceleration from 0 to 200 km/h takes just 7.5 seconds, leaving many sports cars and even hypersport bikes in its wake.

A chassis that can handle anything

The aluminium perimeter frame with electronic DDC (Dynamic Damping Control) suspension automatically adapts to the stiffness of the 45 mm Mazocchi upside-down fork and monoshock. Preload, rebound and compression are adjusted electronically. The system offers an ideal compromise between rigidity and flexibility. The motorcycle demonstrates maximum precision on the road and even more so on the racetrack. A steering damper reinforces this characteristic and ensures excellent stability even on uneven road surfaces. The front brakes consist of Nissin radial calipers with four pistons, combined with 320 mm brake discs from the Superbike sector. The braking power is impressive. At the rear, a Brembo single-piston brake caliper grips a 220 mm brake disc. All this is controlled by Cornering ABS, which enables safe and powerful braking both on straights and in corners. The ultra-light carbon rims reduce unsprung mass and improve responsiveness and manoeuvrability. The motorcycle can be guided through corners with astonishing ease. In addition, the winglets, i.e. aerodynamic wings, provide greater stability at high speeds. They also keep the front axle on the ground during heavy acceleration. The winglets generate up to 11 kilograms of downforce: the front wheel does not lift off unintentionally so easily and performance is enhanced.

Pure adrenaline while riding

Every twist of the throttle results in an immediate response and continuous thrust, thanks to the electronic ride-by-wire control and short-stroke throttle. The M 1000 R impresses on straights with its explosive engine, but it is in the corners that it reveals its true sophistication. The sophisticated chassis geometry, combined with state-of-the-art electronics, ensures remarkable handling. The M 1000 R offers several riding modes for different environments: Rain, Road, Dynamic, Race and the fully customisable Pro Race 1, 2 and 3 modes.

In these modes, the rider can adjust the DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) to suit their preferences and riding style. Each mode precisely adjusts the parameters of the engine, suspension and electronic riding aids, offering a riding experience perfectly tailored to the rider. The Shifter Pro up & down works with high precision, enables gear changes without the clutch and ensures that the motorcycle remains completely stable, especially during heavy acceleration or deceleration. The M 1000 R is an extreme machine. Its modular design allows it to be configured to suit individual preferences, so riders can get the most out of it regardless of the terrain.

Integrated technologies

The 6.5-inch TFT colour display offers a clear, modern and intuitive user interface. It features functions such as GPS navigation, Bluetooth connectivity and a special race mode. This can be easily activated with the left thumb via control buttons on the handlebars. The M 1000 R is equipped with numerous riding aids: Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Shifter Pro, engine brake control, electronic suspension DDC, anti-wheelie system, slip control, hill start aid, cruise control, launch control and much more. All these systems work together to provide an exciting yet safe riding experience.

A machine for purists

The BMW M 1000 R is aimed at motorcyclists who are looking for uncompromising top performance. With its powerful engine, sophisticated chassis and electronics, it redefines the sporty roadster. It is more than just a motorcycle – it embodies passion. Our fully equipped test model costs €28,995. However, the M 1000 R is available from €20,995 in the basic version without optional extras.
