Luxembourg registered 3,048 new passenger cars in August 2026, 4.9% more than a year earlier. Battery-electric models now take 37.1% of the market and sit just one point behind hybrids, while Chinese brands push past 6% of registrations.
According to the vehicle fleet open data published by the Société nationale de circulation automobile (SNCA) on data.public.lu, 3,048 new passenger cars were registered in Luxembourg in August 2026, against 2,905 a year earlier. The market therefore gains 4.9% year on year, after the 3.1% decline recorded in July. Volumes remain typical of a quiet summer month, well below July’s 4,277 registrations, but the summer of 2026 closes on a stronger note than that of 2025.
Electric closes in on hybrid
Hybrids (petrol or diesel, plug-in or not) remain the leading powertrain of the month at 38.2% of registrations, almost exactly the 38.4% recorded in August 2025. Behind them, battery-electric cars jump from 24.5% to 37.1% in a year, a gain of 12.6 points. Of the 3,048 new cars registered in the month, 1,131 run on electricity alone. Petrol falls sharply, from 28.3% to 18.8%, and diesel continues to erode, at 5.8% against 8.8% a year earlier. Taken together, electrified powertrains account for 75.3% of the market, up from 62.9% in August 2025.
The best-seller list tells the same story. The month’s most registered model, the BMW iX3, is fully electric, as are the Kia EV3 and the BMW iX1, both also in the top ten. Of the 99 Mercedes CLAs registered, 87 were electric versions, along with 43 of the 87 Mercedes GLCs.

BMW leads the brands, the iX3 wins the month
Among brands, BMW comes out on top with 13.0% of registrations and 396 units, ahead of Mercedes (11.2%), Audi (7.8%), Volkswagen (6.6%) and Škoda (6.2%). Kia (5.6%), Renault (5.2%), Opel (4.4%), Mini (3.1%) and Peugeot (2.8%) complete a top ten that accounts for 66.0% of the market. Volkswagen posts the sharpest fall, with 201 registrations against 346 in August 2025, down 41.9%. Opel (up 168%), Kia (up 77%) and Mini (up 57%) record the strongest gains.
Among models, the BMW iX3 takes the lead with 127 units and a 4.2% market share, against 80 in July. It is followed by the Mercedes CLA (99), the Mercedes GLC (87), the Audi A3 Sportback (80) and the Kia EV3 (77). The Opel Frontera and BMW X1 (55 each), the BMW X3 and Opel Corsa (45 each) and the BMW iX1 (43) round off a top ten in which BMW places four models. A year earlier the ranking was led by the Volkswagen Polo (79), the Škoda Kodiaq (66) and the Volkswagen Tiguan (62), none of which appears in the August 2026 list.

Chinese brands move past 6%
Chinese manufacturers are accelerating in the Grand Duchy. Together, Jaecoo, BYD, MG, Leapmotor, Omoda, Forthing, Xpeng, Geely, Livan, BAIC, BAW, NIO, Zeekr and Bestune account for 191 registrations in August 2026, or 6.3% of the market, against 2.8% a year earlier. Their share has more than doubled, and the number of Chinese brands active on the Luxembourg market rises from nine to fourteen.
Jaecoo stays ahead with 47 units, followed by BYD (43) and MG (42), then Leapmotor (22) and Omoda (9). Most of that volume comes from the plug-in hybrid Jaecoo 7 (33 units), the BYD Seal U (18) and the electric MG S5 (18).
August confirms how quickly the Luxembourg market is changing, with electric cars and Chinese manufacturers gaining ground as petrol and diesel retreat.
